New WordPress Theme Added!

Just to let you all know (as promised) I’ve added another theme to my WordPress Theme Portfolio. This theme is called Deliverance Black Photography and it’s a very simplistic and basic theme aimed at photographers and those who are simply looking to display an array of images. As usual, the theme is 100% free.

The link to downloading the theme plus more information can be found here.

Computer Hardware Chart

While I was recently browsing a technology forum I came across this extremely useful colour computer hardware chart which shows both new and old ports/sockets/components and helps you identify them with large colour images. Click here to view and download the 4320 x 6120/ 8.2MB wall-poster version.

Computer Security Software & Quick Fix Guide

Computer Security & Quick Fix Guide

Computer security is certainly an area of concern for computer users. Knowledge in this area is very poor to be honest. Prevention is most certainly better than cure and to help kick this off is by educating people.

I am fixing (curing, perhaps) one to two laptops a week with viral issues and I see the same issues all the time. The anti-virus software is out of date and has never been used to scan and there is no other protection on top of that. In some instances there was two out-of-date anti-virus programs. The operating system is never updated and in some cases the firewall had been turned off. Have a look at the full post to see what free programs are recommended.

I have compiled a Quick Fix Guide to removing viruses, spyware and malware and which recommended free software you can download and use. As usual, by using this free guide you are agreeing that I’m not accountable in any way if you encounter any problems – you can always ask me for help though, always use caution if you are not sure or contact someone you know who’s somewhat computer literate.

Open DNS – A solution for our beleaguered ISPs?

Eircom can have common DNS issues

Have you ever had one of those issues where websites open slowly, some open and more often than not some don’t? These issues can happen several times a month for some ISPs and as a account holder of Eircom Broadband I was getting them quite regularly too. These issues are generally DNS issues.

Solution:

Open DNS. I wont go into detail of what a DNS is but here is a little tasty link that will break the term down for you. Fortunately, you don’t have to know what it is or how it works to fix your DNS issue.

Here’s how to get it going for Eircom users:

  • Click this link… http://192.168.1.254/
  • The above link accesses your Netopia Router where you can change your DNS settings.
  • Select expert mode on the left hand-side of the screen and select the option to enter it once it appears.
  • Select the Configure option on left hand-side of the screen.
  • Click Connection on the left-hand side of the screen.
  • You should be able to see the two fields about mid-way down the page for Primary DNS Server and Secondary DNS Server.
  • Take down the numbers currently in those fields so you can revert to them should any issue arise.
  • You will have to change the Primary DNS Server field to 208.67.222.222
  • You will have to change the Secondary DNS Server to 208.67.220.220
  • Make sure the entries you entered above are entered correctly.
  • Click save changes.
  • It may take a couple minutes to correct itself and the router may need to be re-started.
  • Voila! No more DNS issues! ( From €ircom, at least :-) )

PC Set-up

People who know me know I like to build all my own computers and over-clock the crap out of them. My newest build is no different. This was probably the most difficult of all my builds though. While my first build in this case fit in quite snugly, the purchase of my Scythe Ninja made things a lot more difficult.
My new motherboard made things almost impossible. I could barely squeeze the fan on the HS and get them all in at the same time. I had to put the fan on when the MB was seated and that was no easy job. Oh and did I mention the 8pin power connector is? It’s under the Scythe Ninja, almost next to the CPU.

Server Busy Error | Lightroom | Paging File

For the last three or so months I’ve been getting the following system error when using Lightroom:

Server Busy

This action cannot be completed because the other program is busy.
Choose Switch To to activate the busy program and correct the problem.

The error pops up again after you get rid of it and it makes your Lightroom experience a total nightmare.

I never did anything about it until this morning when I finally had enough. I trawled a few forums to see if people had similar issues and I found that it was actually quite a common problem. They blamed everything from Norton Internet Security to Spyware to memory leaks and none of the forums had an answer, or their members had fixed the issue and failed to update the thread and it’s fellow members on how to get around it.

So, I’m writing this post so the information is on the public domain, so people can Google it and fix the issue.

The problem lies in the ‘paging file’. To fix it:

Go into > Control Panel > System & Maintenance > Advanced System Settings > Click the ‘Advanced’ tab > Click ‘settings’ in the performance box > Click the ‘advanced’ tab > Click ‘Change’ in the Virtual Memory box > Now change the option from ‘Custom Size’ to ‘System Managed Size’. Done!

Computer Security Research

I’m currently doing some research into computer security habits and how people can be complacent when it comes to computer security. Despite heavily publicised regular attacks, people just seem like they don’t want to know about it. Please consider completing these polls as they give me an insight into how informed the general public are. These polls are private and no-one will know what you selected. You are free to view the results at any time by selecting the option at the end of the poll.

Thanks for your time.

Samsung NC10 Netbook

Click here to view the rest of the post, all the photographs and the RAM upgrade guide.

I recently realised that my Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop wasn’t exactly the most convenient laptop for carrying around. I needed a laptop that I could carry around and stash away practically anywhere. I needed something handy for storing sickening amounts of photographs when abroad. And sometimes for internet access too.

That’s where the netbook came in. A netbook is basically a smaller laptop with all the features of an ordinary laptop bar the DVD/CD drive. After considerable researching, the same name kept popping up and popping up. The Samsung NC10. Famed for it’s great battery, it’s great specs and even better price. I decided that I wanted it.

Glary Utilities: Freeware

Just to let you all know there is a new and promising freeware out called Glary Utilities out.

I’m a massive fan of CCleaner but this seems to do all that CCleaner does and more.

It’s functions include…

Process Manager
Disk Cleaner
Registry Cleaner
Uninstall Manager
Start-up Manager
Memory Optimizer
Registry Defrag
Tracks Eraser
File Shredder
File Undeleter
File Encryption & Decryption

and loads more….

This is 100% free, albeit there is an option to upgrade to a paid version. Memory footprints seems light so far. Give it a lash.
